Styling your lounge for a cosy winter

It’s pretty common knowledge that my partner and I are new to the property market – we can’t stop talking about it. It’s also common knowledge that having bought in Auckland, we’ve got to be smart with how we’re now spending our money.

We’ve been budgeting quite well these last four months, but that comes down to doing our research. So when Genesis Energy brought out their 12-month Happy Winter plan where you can save up to $250 off your home’s first power bill, we jumped at the opportunity to essentially get free power for a whole month in winter (we’re low usage with just the two of us)!

That meant I could convince the boyfriend to come shopping, because a Happy Winter plan should come with a happy winter cosy lounge, right? You know I’m right!

I focused on three elements to make my lounge winter cosy (and this helped me stay on target when at the shops too)…

Patterns and texture:

Our existing rug had a great geometric pattern to it, so I knew I needed to stick to the clean lines. Cue patterned cushions dotted around, with plainer velvet cushions to balance it out – All from Farmers. Bringing in a classic winter texture was essential, and we couldn’t go past faux fur at its finest. We found this in a great new rug and throw.

All about throws:

Oh, yes! Nothing beats rugging up on a cold winter’s night, so we say the more the merrier when it comes to throws. We splurged on a quality faux fur throw from Ezibuy, and pulled back the budget on a second white knitted throw from Kmart. Genesis Energy has a mobile app for monitoring your usage, which means we can keep an eye on it and decide between heat pump or simply making use of the throws each night – a great way to stay on that monthly budget without playing the guessing game!

Layering rugs:

Lastly, we were able to stretch the budget a bit more and get a faux fur rug I have had my eye on from Kmart. Layering rugs is a relatively new concept in mainstream home decor, however it absolutely makes sense during winter – especially because we have wooden floors. Now our feet are staying toasty, and our cats aren’t complaining either.

Thanks to Genesis Energy, we were able to seriously upgrade our lounge vibes…
